The Nursery - Humble beginnings...

2

The First Steps...

Journey from child labour to education - the first steps to freedom

Parijat Academy is a school for underprivileged children in Guwahati, India. The Principal (Uttam Teron) has dedicated his life to making his village a better place. Guwahati is home to thousands of children who do not have access to education. According to Uttam it is important for the children of Guwahati to have access to education because without education they risk becoming victims of child labour. Thus, to keep the children safe and also to provide them with a sense of purpose Uttam started Parijat Academy.

Humble beginnings…

Uttam was born to a train driver father and a homemaker mother who never went to school; he invested the Rs 800 he had earned as a private tutor in constructing a room with a tin roof and bamboo walls.

A passion to serve his people…

Parijat got its first classes. With the remaining amount, a pair of desks and benches was procured from a village carpenter. His teaching started in 2003 with four students.

His love and dedication has grown to serve even more children…

Uttam’s dream has expanded and Parijat Academy now serves more than 520 children ranging from a nursery to class 10.

Uttam’s dedication inspired Lordsai.com to build Parijat Academy a new nursery

We have also provided desks, benches and other learning materials to get them started. See more pictures of the nursery here

Lordsai.com now wants to take them to the next level…

The picture on the left depicts the standard found in the nurseries in the UK. It is our desire to equip Parijat Academy with similar facilities together with a well structured curriculum as requested by Uttam Teron.

Testimony from Derrika Hunt - Volunteer from Florida State University, USA

“The children of Parijat Academy are truly beacons of light. They have faced many barriers to education. Yet, they continue to bravely fight for their education. In fact, many of the children served at Parijat attend class in bamboo classrooms. The classrooms are very unstable, cold and when it rains, rain gets on the children. But they still show up to school every day. When I asked the children why the continued to show up, even when getting rained on, many of them replied by saying that they are determined to get an education. Many of the children have also expressed that education is their key to escaping poverty so they are determined to do whatever it takes to get their education. As a volunteer, I admired the children’s dedication to getting an education despite the numerous obstacles they face daily.” - Derrika Hunt
